Volleyball Falls in Five-Setter at LMU


HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Lincoln Memorial fought off visiting Catawba to post a five-set win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Mars Gym. The Railsplitters improved to 4-8 overall and 4-5 in the SAC, winning 18-25, 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11. The Catawba Indians drop to 3-6 and 2-6.

Freshman Jasmine Wooten collected 14 kills, while adding nine digs and three service aces. Jade Brooks followed with nine kills, 16 digs and seven blocks with Claire Kellum adding eight kills and 14 digs. Libero Malia Carr registered 16 digs and setter Morgan Hester provided 36 assists.

After dropping set four, LMU came out quickly in the fifth and deciding set. The Railsplitters jumped out to a 7-1 edge and kept Catawba at bay. Kaley Long had two kills and a block, while Rylee Storms had a block and a kill in the early run.

Catawba put together a late charge, scoring four straight points to pull within 12-10. Jaida Henderson had two kills, Wooten a kill and Kellum an ace to get the Lady Indians close. Wooten’s final kill made it 13-11 before Cate Hosenfeld and Storms put down kills for Lincoln Memorial to end the match.

The Lady Indians pulled out the fourth set to force the final by scoring five of the last six points. Tied at 20-20, back-to-back kills from Wooten pushed Catawba up by two and it was 23-20 after an ace by Allie Grubb. Two LMU errors gave Catawba the set.

Four LMU hitters posted double figures in kills, led by Lindsey Nartker with 13. Yileen Ng He posted a dozen with Hosenfeld coming in with 11 and Storms 10. Storms added eight blocks, while Nartker contributed 14 digs. Sarah Jones totaled 21 digs, while Emily Walter provided 48 assists.

Catawba finishes up the weekend road trip with a match on Saturday at Carson-Newman at 5 p.m.
