Football Falls at Limestone

GAFFNEY. S.C. -- Limestone held Catawba scoreless in the second half and posted a 52-24 victory in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at The Reservation at Gaffney High School. The host Saints improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 1-4 and 0-2.

Limestone scored on its first four possessions to jump out to a 28-3 lead after a quarter. Catawba regrouped and got a touchdown on early in the second quarter on an eight-yard run by Kendall Davis to make it 28-10.

Elijah Banks blocked a 48-yard field goal attempt by the Saints on their next possession and the Indians went 69 yards in four plays to trim the deficit to 28-17. Davis hit on two long pass plays in the drive, connecting with Demonte Good for 41 yards then Kolby Easley for a 25-yard score..

Limestone’s offense drove back into the red zone and had a first down at the Catawba 10, but Brenden Westbrook intercepted a pass and raced 85 yards to bring the Indians with 28-24. The Saints regained the momentum as they drove 75 to make it 35-24 at the break. The score came on a first and goal from the 25 when DJ Phillips connected in the end zone with Juwan Scott.

Limestone clamped down on Catawba in the second half, keeping the Indians off the scoreboard and intercepting Davis twice. Scott caught another touchdown pass from Phillips late in the third quarter and the Saints scored twice in the final quarter to pull away.

Davis threw for 268 yards and ran for another 96, accounting for two touchdowns in the loss. He completed 17-of-39 passes, but was intercepted three times. Easley had three catches for 51 yards and Roman White made three grabs for 41 yards. 

Catawba saw an opponent produce a pair of 100-yard runners for the second straight week. Jerko’ya Patton had 121 yards with Malik Brooks added 102. Phillips went 17-of-24 passing for 269 yards and four touchdowns. Scott made seven catches for 144 yards and three scores.

Catawba stays on the road next weekend as the Indians head to Carson-Newman for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Eagles.
