Volleyball Ends Road Swing With Loss at CN
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Catawba was swept in three sets by host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse. The Lady Eagles won the match by the scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-22 in improving to 8-5 overall and 6-4 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-7 and 2-7.
Catawba had a tough hitting night, swinging at just 8.4% in the loss. Jade Brooks led the way with nine kills and added three blocks. Claire Kellum followed with seven kills and five digs. Ashley Johnson added a pair of blocks and Malia Carr recorded eight digs. Morgan Hester had eight digs and 19 assists.
Erin Edwards and Joy Rhodes each had 10 kills for Carson-Newman, who hit at 36%. Edwards added six blocks. Morgan Ballard dug up 10 balls and Taylor Rohr posted 21 assists.
Carson-Newman jumped out quickly in set one and built a 19-5 lead after an ace by Marnie Streeter. AN ace by Megan Oldernburger put the Eagles up 9-3 in set two. Catawba pulled within 13-9 at one point, but C-N raced out to a 22-13 edge and took the set.
Catawba battled back in the third set. Carson-Newman again led early and led 20-15 when the Lady Indians dug in and got close. Kills from Kellum and Brooks made it 20-17 and after a kill from Payton Medich and an Eagle error it was 21-19. Down 23-19, Catawba ran off three straight points, who on kills from Brooks, to pull within 23-22. Two Catawba errors after a C-N timeout gave the Eagles the win.
Catawba returns home on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt with UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m.
