Good Runs For 124 Yards in Loss at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY. Tenn. -- Carson-Newman returned two kickoffs for touchdowns en route to a 59-14 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium. The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-5 and 0-3.

The Eagles intercepted Catawba on the third play of the game, but the Indian defense denied C-N on a Cameron Davis fumble recovery at the Catawba 29. Carson-Newman took the lead on its next possession as Demitri Saulsberry scored from two yards out to cap an 86-yard drive that was keyed by runs of 39 yards by Antonio Wimbush and 42 yards by Derrick Evans.

Wimbush scored on a four-yard run and Evans scampered 52 yards for another score to push the Eagle lead to 21-0 at the half.

The Eagles returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown as Marcus Williams raced 95 yards to make it 28-0. Down 31-0, Catawba’s defense put the Indians on the scoreboard as Kobe Branch returned a fumble 20 yards for a score with 5:23 left in the third quarter,

Carson-Newman got two quick scores in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Tyler Thackerson ran in from three-yards out and Caleb Goines returned a blocked punt 10 yards for a score as C-N went up 45-7.

Catawba got its second touchdown on a 75-yard by Demonte Good with 3:10 to go. Devon Moore got the final points of the game as he returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Good went over 100 yards rushing for the Indians, finishing with 124 yards on 17 carries. Kendall Davis was limited to 10-of-26 passing for 87 yards. Kolby Easley caught six of those passes for 42 yards.

Carson-Newman ran for 357 yards, led by Evans’ 151. He also threw for 80 yards, completing two of five passes. The Eagles converted on seven of 10 third down opportunities while holding Catawba to 0-for-10.

LJ Melvin had eight tackles including a sack for the Indians. Cris Page intercepted a pass.

Catawba is home next Saturday, hosting Newberry at noon.
