Women's Basketball cruises to win at NewberryNEWBERRY, SC -- Solid shooting and strong defense lifted the Catawba Lady Indians to a 71-50 victory over Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena. The win was the second in a row for Catawba, who improve to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 3-14 and 0-5. Catawba, who shot 52 percent from the floor for the game, started the game with a three pointer from Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) on the way to a 23-8 lead. Catawba continued to add to its advantage and led 40-20 at the half. Despite shooting 0-10 from the free throw line, Newberry had opportunities to claw back into the game. Newberry held Catawba scoreless for over four minutes and cut the lead to 13 points. Following a Catawba timeout, the visitors went on a 12-0 run to stretch their lead to 25 points. During that run, Catawba got strong play from senior forward Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and freshman guard Gia Colombo (Concord, NH), who scored six and five points, respectively. Cox lead Catawba with 20 points and six assists. Locklear finished the game with 12 points and six rebounds, and Colombo had eight points and five rebounds. Newberry was led by junior guard Laura Banda (Holcomb, KS), who scored 17 points and went five-for-eight from three-point land. Freshman forward Tanya Deese (Prosperity, SC) had nine points and eight rebounds, and senior forward Kelsey Maloney (Virginia Beach, VA) had six points. #####
