Volleyball Serves Up A Dozen Aces in Win Over Newberry
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba outlasted Newberry to claim a four-set win over the visiting Wolves in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won 24-26, 27-25, 25-14 and 27-25 to improve to 4-9 overall and 3-8 in the SAC. The Wolves fall to 4-11 and 2-9.
Jade Brooks had consecutive kills to give Catawba a 24-21 lead in set four, but two blocks by Zoe Dinkins and a ball handling error by the Indians tied the set. Brooks had another kill before an answer by Toni-Anne Whitlow tied it again. A service error gave Catawba a fifth match point and Brooks closed it out with an ace.
Brooks finished with 13 kills, 15 digs, five blocks and three aces on the day. Kylie Morgan collected 15 kills with 15 digs and four aces. Claire Kellum also reached double figures in kills with 10. Ashley Johnson had a big game at the net with seven blocks and Allie Grubb served three aces.
Whitlow led Newberry with 18 kills. Dinkins followed with 13 and added four blocks. Katie Ullsperger had 10 kills. Libero Sydney Diaz recorded 19 digs and Avery Webb totaled 30 assists.
The Wolves overcame a 20-16 deficit to win the opening set. Sidra Triplett had a block and a kill then a kill from Whitlow pulled Newberry even at 21-all. The set was tied at 24-24 when Dinkins put down two kills to end the set.
The Lady Indians gave up another late lead in set two. Up 21-16, Catawba saw Newberry rally to get even at 24-24. Johnson powered Catawba at the end, collecting a kill and a solo block to win the set. Catawba rolled in the third set, racing to a 9-1 lead. Brooks had two kills and a block, while Hester served an ace.
Catawba travels to Francis Marion on Tuesday for a non-conference tilt at 7 p.m.
