Volleyball Falls in Tight Match at Francis Marion
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Francis Marion got by Catawba in five sets in volleyball action on Tuesday night at the Smith University Center. The Patriots improve to 12-8, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-10.
The two teams have a history of playing tight matches. The teams set the NCAA II five-set scoring record in the old 30-point format with 288 points on Sept. 1, 2007 and were at it again on Tuesday. This time, Francis Marion came out on top with a tight 25-27, 25-23, 25-23, 26-28 and 15-8 victory. The record with the 25-point format is 262.
A couple of Catawba errors and kills from Alyssa Hansen and Kayla Arthur put FMU up 7-3 in the deciding set and an ace from Hansen made it 10-5. A kill from Allie Grubb cut the margin to 10-8, but FMU reeled off the final four points to take the match.
Catawba fought off three match points in set four that saw 16 ties and eight lead changes. One came on a Patriot service error and the other two on kills by Grubb and Jaida Henderson. Jade Brooks followed the Henderson kill with one of her own and a FMU attack error sent the match to the final set.
Kylie Morgan posted 15 kills and added 14 digs to pace Catawba. Brooks added 11 kills with 13 digs. Morgan Hester handed out 45 assists with 25 digs and two aces.
Iyania Thigpen had 16 kills and six blocks for FMU. Hansen added 13 kills with two aces and Arthur added 10 kills. Finn Millians posted 53 assists with five blocks and two aces. As a team, the Patriots record 13 blocks and served nine aces.
Catawba is at home on Friday, hosting UVa-Wise at 7 p.m.
