Volleyball Cruises to Win Over UVa-Wise
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled to a three-set sweep of visiting UVa-Wise in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improved to 5-10 overall and 4-8 in the SAC with a 25-8, 25-12 and 25-18 victory. The Cavaliers dropped to 1-15 and 0-12.
Catawba was steady on attack, hitting 43% in each set as it posted 47 kills with a mere four errors over 99 swings. Jasmine Wooten led the Lady Indians with 13 kills and hit at 54%, while Jade Brooks hit at 41% and posted a dozen kills.
Allie Grubb was in on three blocks and tallied seven kills with Claire Kellum adding seven kills and two blocks. Setter Morgan Hester picked up 41 assists with 10 digs and two blocks, while libero Malia Carr recorded 17 digs.
Kelsey Green paced the Cavaliers with seven kills and Brooke Abbott added five. Setter Zoe Avery handed out 22 assists with seven digs. Morgan Milligan totaled nine digs.
Catawba dominated set one, racing out to a 12-3 lead. A serving run by Wooten increased the edge to 23-6 with Brooks killing off set point. Hester had back-to-back kills to give Catawba a quick 7-2 lead in set two. Consecutive kills from Ashley Johnson made it 12-6 and the edge went to 21-9 after a kill from Wooten. Wooten’s ace ended the set.
UVa-Wise put up a battle in the third set. An ace from Avery put the Cavaliers up 10-9, but Catawba scored seven of the next nine points to go up 15-11 on a kill by Wooten. A kill by Avery cut the margin to 18-15, but kills from Brooks and Kellum helped push the Lady Indians back to a comfortable margin.
Catawba hosts Tusculum on Saturday at 5 p.m.
