Football Falls to Newberry
SALISBURY. N.C. -- Newberry’s Chance Walker rushed for a school record 261 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a 44-21 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Newberry improves to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-6 and 0-4.
Newberry totaled 589 yards on the day and held Catawba to 310 yards. The Wolves, buoyed by Walker’s record day, had 432 yards on the ground.
Walker scored on a pair of four-yard runs in the opening quarter to put Newberry up 14-0. Demonte Good, who ran for 96 yards for the Indians, cut the margin to 14-7 on a one-yard run with a minute to go in the opening quarter.
Walker added a 26-yard scoring run in the second quarter and with Catawba driving an interception in the red zone derailed the Indians. Walker quickly scored on a 68-yard run as the Wolves built a 27-7 edge late in the half. Catawba got another score with 1:19 left before the break when Kendall Davis connected on a six-yard pass to Kolby Easley.
Walker had two touchdowns in the latter half of the third quarter, scoring on runs of 12 and 78 yards. Catawba’s final score came with nine minute remaining when Kaylon Wade tossed a 12-yard pass to Chylon Thomas.
Colton Bailey had an efficient day for Newberry, completing 9-of-12 passes for 157 yards and one interception. He added 109 yards on the ground. Deshun Kitchings caught three passes for 83 yards.
Davis completed 9-of-18 passes for 137 yards for the Indians before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury. Wade went 3-of-8 for 32 yards. Will Sweeper returned to action and caught three passes for 83 yards, while Easley had four grabs.
Catawba will host Mars Hill next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
