Volleyball Picks Up Win Over Chowan
MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- The Catawba volleyball team got back into the win column with a four-set victory over host Chowan on Tuesday at the Helms Center. The Catawba Indians upped their record to 6-16 with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-19, 25-22 win. The Hawks fall to 4-18.
A trio of freshman posted double digits in kills to pace Catawba. Claire Kellum had 15, Jasmine Wooten 13 and Ashley Johnson 12. Kellum added 21 digs and two aces, while Wooten collected 16 digs. Setter Morgan Hester provided 43 assists, 14 digs and three aces. Libero Malia Carr recorded 24 digs.
Catawba jumped to a 6-0 lead in the opening set, getting a pair of kills from Kellum and an ace by Wooten. Chowan rallied midway through the set, cutting a 16-9 deficit to 18-16. Catawba stayed two points on top until a kill from Chloe Putnam closed the gap to 24-23. After a timeout, Kellum killed off the set point.
Chowan zoomed to an 8-1 lead in set two, but saw Catawba climb within 11-9 after two kills from Johnson and two aces by Kellum. The Hawks used a 5-0 spurt to get back a comfortable margin and win the set.
The Lady Indians used an 8-2 run midway through the third set to grab a 22-16 lead. Wooten killed off the final two Catawba points to end the set.
Set four was tied at 13-all before Catawba took the lead for good on a kill from Jade Brooks. Johnson posted two kills and had a combo block with Kellum in a 4-1 run that moved the lead to 19-15. Catawba stayed up by at least two points the rest of the match.
Anixa Rosa-Martinez had 16 kills, 16 digs and three aces for Chowan. Ann-Marie Johnson had 11 kills and six blocks. Hannah Sladick also had 11 kills, while Katie Houston had 23 digs.
Catawba is on the road Friday with a match at Anderson at 7 p.m.
