Swimming Joins ECAC for Upcoming Season
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College has announced that its men’s and women’s swim teams have joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) for the 2019-20 season. The teams will compete in the 2020 ECAC Swimming Championships which will be held from Feb. 28 through March 1 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
“We are extremely excited to compete in the ECAC Conference,” stated Catawba Head Swim Coach Mike Sever. “Though the conference is notably Division I programs, Catawba men and women stack-up strongly against the competitors. It’s a huge opportunity for Catawba to compete on this stage and earn podium finishes.”
More than twenty teams will be represented including, Navy, Army, Bucknell, Penn, Loyola, and Harvard to name a few. Swimmers must meet qualification times to be eligible to swim at the conference championships. Catawba’s final qualifying competition will be the Royal Open at Queens University on Feb. 21-22.
“The ECAC Championships is the perfect fit for Catawba Swimming. The qualification standards provide unique training and competitive incentives and the ECAC Championships at Navy provides a big meet experience like NCAA Nationals. Catawba will be a competitive force.”
Catawba swam in several championships in its early years of swimming, first competing in the ODAC/Atlantic States Championships at the end of the 1996 and 1997 seasons. In 1998, Catawba swam in the Penn-Ohio Championships before taking part from 1999-2001 in the Bluegrass Mountain Championships. In 2002 and 2003, Catawba competed at the Southern States Championships before joining the Bluegrass Mountain Conference again 2004, where it competed over the past 16 seasons.
Catawba will re-evaluate its post-season meets again next year.
