Indians Take Opening Game Loss in Overtime 95-90
Florence, SC -- In their opening game of the season, the Catawba men's basketball team (0-1) lost in overtime to UNC Pembroke (1-0) in the first game of the SAC/Peach Belt Challenge.
The Indians held a double digit lead late in the second half when the Braves from UNC Pembroke stormed back in the last minute of the second half to tie the game at 84-84. Catawba would have one more shot before overtime to win the game, however the shot fell short.
In overtime Pembroke took a three point lead with less than thirty seconds to go. Catawba would go down the floor to attempt a three pointer to tie the game, but Devin Cooper's shot was short of the rim after a questionable no foul call on his shot attempt. The Braves then shot two more free throws just seconds later to put the game away.
Cooper would lead the Indians with 30 points while shooting 50% from the three point line. Marcell Haskett had 14 points and shot 5-12 from the floor.
Catawba will play game two of the SAC/Peach Belt Challenge tomorrow against host Francis Marion. Gametime is set for 4:00 pm.
