Football Falls to UVa-Wise
WISE, Va. -- Catawba came up short on Saturday in a 21-14 loss to host UVa-Wise in South Atlantic Conference football action at Smith Stadium. The Cavaliers improve to 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-9 and 0-7.
Roman White ran for a score late in the first half and Dominic Burnam caught a 10-yard pass from Kaylon Wade to give Catawba a 14-7 edge early in the third quarter. Wise answered with two late third-quarter touchdowns and held on for the win.
The Indians drove to the Wise 20 on its final drive, but incomplete passes on third and fourth down gave the ball back to Wise, who ran out the final 23 seconds.
UVa-Wise scored first as Lendon Redwine completed a 47-yard pass from Kadarius Singleton late in the first quarter. Catawba tied the game, capitalizing on an interception by Jeremiah Ferguson in the last minute of the half. Ferguson set the Indians up on the Wise seven and White ran in on the first play to put Catawba even at the break.
The Indians scored on its first drive of the second half to go up 14-7 on Burnam’s catch. Wise tied it on its ensuing possession when Redwine connected for 33 yards to Kamal Fisher. The Cavaliers forced a fumble and quickly got the ball back at the Catawba 15. Mykael Anderson gave Wise the lead on a nine-yard run with 3:16 to go in the third quarter.
Wade threw for 174 yards on 20-of-43 passing. White, Burnam, Will Sheehan and Andrew Bynum all caught three passes. Bynum led the ground game with 36 yards. Ferguson made 10 tackles on defense with a sack and the interception. Trey Murray also had an interception.
Redwine went 17-of-33 through the air for 206 yards for Wise. Terrence Lambert ran for 88 yards. Anderson made seven catches for 48 yards.
Catawba will close out the season at home on Saturday, facing nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne, in the school’s 1,000 football game.
