Volleyball Ends Season With Loss to C-N
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba wrapped up its 2019 volleyball season with a three-set loss to visiting Carson-Newman on Saturday night at Goodman Gym in South Atlantic Conference action. The Eagles move to 22-7 overall and 16-6 in the SAC, winning 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18. The Catawba Indians end at 7-19 and 5-17.
Claire Kellum reached double figures in kills for Catawba with 10 and added 13 digs and an ace. Allie Grubb and Jade Brooks each had six kills with Brooks adding two blocks, 11 digs and four aces. Setter Morgan Hester provided 25 assists and 13 digs, while libero Malia Carr had 16 digs.
Erin Edwards paced Carson-Newman with 11 kills and three blocks. Megan Oldenburger added nine kills, 13 digs and served nine aces. Katie Parnell collected seven blocks and Morgan Ballard had 15 digs.
Carson-Newman jumped to a 7-2 lead in set one, but Catawba rallied behind two Brooks aces to tie the set at 7-all. The Eagles stretched the lead out again to 14-8 on a combo block by Parnell and Kendall Cooley. The lead went to 21-13 before another Lady Indians rally. Grubb had three kills to spark a 5-0 run that got Catawba within 21-18, but C-N held on.
A 7-0 run midway through set two pushed Carson-Newman up 21-14. Oldenburger served four aces in the surge. Two blocks and a kill from Brooks cut the margin to 22-19, but again the Eagles held on for the set win.
Catawba led 9-4 to open the third set, but Oldenburger had three straight kills and a block to help C-N pull even at 9-9. A kill by Parnell and two from Edwards pushed the Eagles up 22-17 and Oldenburger followed her kill with two aces to end the match.
