Catawba Loses to Newberry in Two Overtimes 91-84
Salisbury, NC -- In a wild double overtime affair, the Catawba men's basketball team (4-2, 0-1 SAC) was defeated by Newberry (4-1, 1-0 SAC) 91-84. Zaqwuan Matthews led the Indians with 18 points.
It was a rough start for Catawba as they scored just 22 points in the first half. The Indians struggled all night from behind the arc, shooting 23% on the night. Newberry led 35-22 at the half after a great defensive effort.
Catawba would storm back to tie the game in the second half and it looked like the Indians would take that momentum and take over the game. Newberry had other ideas however as regulation would come down to the final seconds.
Luke Gibson would get the last shot of regulation for Newberry, and at the buzzer hit a two-pointer to tie the game 68-68 and force overtime.
Newberry would get out to a 77-72 lead in the first overtime, but Catawba would mount a comeback and tie the game at 79-79 with just over one minute remaining. Both teams had an opportunity to win it, but missed shots by the Indians' Devin Cooper and Newberry's Marcus Ford sent the game to double overtime.
In overtime number two it would be all Newberry as they out-scored Catawba 11-5 in the period. Angelo Sales Jr. and QuanDaveon McCollum came up big for Newberry as Sales scored 25 points while McCollum scored 15.
The free throw line was a key difference in the game as the Indians shot just 56% while Newberry shot 80%. Newberry also out-rebounded Catawba 55-46.
Daquan Lilly posted a double-double on the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Malik Constantine also had a big game scoring 16 points and grabbing 8 boards.
This Saturday the Indians travel to Tusculum for another SAC match-up at 4 pm.
