Women's Basketball Goes to 5-0 After Win Over Newberry
Salisbury, NC -- The hot start continues for the Catawba women's basketball team (5-0, 1-0 SAC) as they defeated Newberry (3-3, 0-1 SAC) 73-55. This is the first 5-0 start for the Indians since the 2004-2005 season.
It was a slow start for both teams as Newberry would win the first quarter 11-8. Catawba would turn up the heat in the second quarter by scoring 25 points and took a 33-28 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would be much of the same as the Indians would pull away from Newberry and dominate the second half. Taisha DeShazo would lead Catawba once again with 17 points. DeShazo leads the team with 14 points per game on the season.
Shemya Stanbeck would come off the bench to score a season high 14 points along with 3 rebounds.
Catawba shot 44% from the floor while Newberry shot just 36%. Newberry would win the rebound battle however as they collected 44 to the Indians' 33. The turnover battle helped Catawba's cause on the night as Newberry turned the ball over 28 times.
The Indians are back in action on the road this Saturday when they travel to Tusculum for a 2 pm conference game.
