Track and Field Posts 14 School Records In Season Opening Meet
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba opened its indoor track and field season on Sunday at the JDL Early Bird Invitational at the JDL Fast Track. The Catawba Indians set 14 school records in the year’s first meet.
Nearly every field record fell at the meet. MeKayla White broke her own marks in both the long jump (5.77m) and the triple jump (11.59m), while Candace Swepson broke her own marks in the shot put (11.49m) and the weight thrown (14.45m). Freshman Lyndon Strickland took down the men’s marks in the shot put (12.74m) and weight throw (12.81m). Two other men’s freshman notched field marks as Jesse Schronce went 1.85m in the high jump and Carlos Horcacitas-Martin equaled the record of 13.70m in the triple jump.
On the track, Kierra McNeill set a 60m record (7.69) with freshman Trinity Gatewood setting a new standard in the 60m (9.24). Freshman Samantha Payne topped the 400m mark (58.57) and twin sister Skylar set a 500m record (1:23.53). Jaylen Hall set a men’s 500m record (1:10.26). The final record was set by the women’s 4x400 relay team of Kierra Jones, the Payne sisters and Gianna Gutierrez-Principe at 4:16.11.
Catawba was runner up in four events. White went second in the long jump with Tyler Osifo took second in the 200m (22.54) and Justen Burnette third (22.56). Braxton Ford was second in the 400m (51.98) and Tom Joyce second in the Mile (4:25.22). Samantha Payne took third in the 400m.
Catawba will return to action after the break, taking part in the Liberty Kickoff on Jan. 24-25 in Lynchburg, Va.
