Daytona Beach, FL -- The Catawba women's basketball team made history Monday night as they advanced to 9-0 on the season after a win over Embry-Riddle (5-5, 3-1 SSC) 82-74. The win breaks the previous record of an 8-0 start to a season in 1998-99.

The Indians got out to a 9 point lead after the first quarter of the contest. The second period saw the Eagles close the gap as they out-scored Catawba 26-20. Taisha DeShazo scored 9 of her 20 points in the first half, while Lyrik Thorne scored 6 of her 14 in the half.

Eleven different Catawba players scored in the first half as the Indians showed off their depth early. Catawba shot 38% from the floor in the half while also going 6-7 from the foul line.

Sarah Jones was the high scorer for Embry-Riddle scoring 23 points, with 14 coming in the first half. For the game Jones shot 50% from the floor as well as from behind the arc.

The third quarter saw both offenses struggle as the Eagles scored just 5 points. The Indians would score 15 points in the period to extend their advantage to 13 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles' comeback came up short as they out-scored Catawba 27-22 in the final period, but it wouldn't be enough as the Indians held on to get the victory.

Shemya Stanbeck came through with a big game scoring 13 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Junior Anna Gardner put up 8 points while going 3-4 from the floor.

The Indians bench came through once again in this one as they out-scored Embry-Riddle's bench 35-14. Catawba also dominated the paint by scoring 42 points while the Eagles scored 28.
