Catawba Defeats Division I UNC-Wilmington in Exhibition Game
Myrtle Beach, SC -- It was a wild one in Myrtle Beach as the #19 Catawba women's basketball team defeated UNC-Wilmington (3-6) 78-75 in an exhibition game. Madison Hallman and Taisha DeShazo each had 13 points on the night.
On the season the Indians are 9-0 and 4-0 in the SAC standings. The win caps a spectacular first half for Catawba as they prepare for the stretch run beginning in January.
Shemya Stanbeck put up 12 points on the night while going 5-7 from the floor. Talia Barnes helped the Indians' cause with 11 points to go with 5 rebounds. Freshman Lyrik Thorne scored in double digits with 10 points.
With Catawba up three with less than five seconds left, Wilmington's Timber Tate hit a clutch three-pointer to send the game to overtime. That wouldn't bother the Indians, however, as they fought back in overtime. Stanbeck would hit two big free throws late in the overtime period to seal the victory.
With the win, the Indians get their first ever victory over the Seahawks. Wilmington had won the first six games in series history.
Catawba will return to the court on January 2nd for a SAC match-up against Wingate inside Goodman Gym. Tip-off is set for 5 pm.
