Men's Basketball Tops Southern Wesleyan for Ninth Win of the Season
Salisbury, NC -- In their final non-conference game of the season, the Catawba men's basketball team (9-2, 4-1 SAC) defeated Southern Wesleyan (6-6) 94-87 on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Indians' win streak to five games.
The game remained close throughout as both teams battled back and forth the entire way. Southern Wesleyan's largest lead of the game was 3 points, while Catawba's was 12 late in the second half. Four Indians scored over 15 points, with Daquan Lilly leading the way with 20.
Catawba held a two point lead heading into halftime as the Warriors played a strong first half to keep the came tight. Clenzo Ross would be the key man for Southern Wesleyan as he scored 28 points to lead all scorers.
The first half saw Larry McLeod show off his athleticism as he converted multiple dunks and led the team with 14 points after half number one. McLeod would finish the game with 16 points while shooting 70% from the field.
The hard fought battle continued until eight minutes left to go in the second half. The Indians would go on a 16-4 run to create the separation they needed to finish off the Warriors.
Devin Cooper and Marcell Haskett played big in the win as Cooper scored 17 points while Haskett put up 18.
Catawba had a big advantage in the paint out-scoring Southern Wesleyan 50-36. For the game the Indians shot 50% from the floor and 33% from long range.
Catawba will hit the court again on January 4th when they host SAC rival Carson-Newman for a 4 pm tip-off inside Goodman Gym.
