Women's Basketball Gets Road Win to Improve to 11-1
Hartsville, SC -- After a heartbreaking loss last time out, the Catawba women's basketball team (11-1, 6-1 SAC) defeated Coker (4-7, 1-6 SAC) on the road tonight by the score of 76-66. Shemya Stanback stole the show as she scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Indians.
Both offenses got off to fast starts in the first quarter as Catawba led 23-21 after one period. The Indians shot 53% from the floor while connecting on 42% of their shots from long range. Stanback scored 5 of her 18 points in the quarter. Meanwhile the Cobras shot 53% from the floor as well while hitting one three pointer.
In quarter number two both teams would slow down their high scoring pace. The Indians shot just 35% from the floor while going 2-6 from behind the arc. Catawba took just a three point lead into halftime against the struggling Cobras.
The Indians would get separation in the third quarter with the help of Stanback's 7 point period. Sara McIntosh would also contribute 3 points in the quarter and total 8 points on the game. The bench carried Catawba as they scored 51 of the team's 76 points.
Stanback would put up 6 more points in the fourth to secure the win. For the night Stanback shot 6-12 from the floor in 30 minutes of play. She also collected 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 assists.
Although the Indians' offense struggled most of the night, Coker turned the ball over 35 times as opposed to Catawba's 20 to help offset Catawba's offensive woes.
Coming into tonight's action the Indians were ranked #14 in the media poll while also receiving votes in the coaches poll. Their next game will take place this Saturday when they travel to Lincoln Memorial for a 2 pm tip off.
