Hartsville, SC -- Coming in ranked #16 in the country, the Catawba men's basketball team (11-2, 6-1 SAC) held on for a 85-81 win over Coker (2-9, 1-6 SAC). The Indians led 44-28 at the half, but Coker would storm back in the second half to make it a close contest at the end.
Despite only shooting 1-11 from three point land in the first half, Catawba would take a comfortable halftime lead thanks to a strong performance by Marcell Haskett. Haskett scored 13 in the half on 3-10 shooting and 7-7 from the charity stripe. The Indians shot 42% from the floor as a team in half number one. Larry McLeod and Devin Cooper scored 9 points each to help Catawba take the early advantage.
The second half was a different story as Coker would heat up by shooting 56% from the field and 46% from beyond the arc. Royce Hunter led the way scoring 14 second half points. Malcolm Kennedy and Chris Swiney each put up 11 points.
The Indians would struggle again from long range shooting just 3-11 in the half while only shooting 37% from the floor. With 9 seconds to play, the Cobras had the Indians' lead down to two. Coker had to foul to stop the clock, and Haskett would be the one to hit two clutch free throws to seal the victory for Catawba.
The Indians would win the turnover battle as the Cobras turned the ball over 19 times compared to 11 for Catawba. The Indians capitalized off those turnovers as they scored 25 points, which would be a big factor in the outcome.
