Hallman Leads Catawba to Big Victory Over Lenoir-Rhyne
Salisbury, NC -- The Catawba women's basketball team (14-1, 9-1 SAC) continued their strong play Saturday afternoon as they defeated SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne (6-10, 4-6 SAC) 67-57. Madison Hallman came up with a big performance scoring 15 points and collecting 7 rebounds in the win.
The Indians got off to a quick 9-0 start over the Bears to begin the game. Taisha DeShazo and Lyrik Thorne helped lead the fast start as DeShazo scored the first 4 points while Thorne hit a three point shot to make it 9-0. Lenoir-Rhyne would come back quickly however and got to within 3 points at the end of the period. The Bears shot 45% in the quarter while Catawba shot 31%.
Quarter number two saw the Indians create separation by out-scoring Lenoir-Rhyne 18-9. Hallman would score 7 of her 15 points in the period. Freshman Janiya Downs had her best game of the season, scoring 10 points. Downs scored 4 of her points in the second quarter.
The Bears continued to struggle from the floor in the third period, shooting 30% form the field. Catawba shot 35% in the quarter and maintained the lead heading into the fourth.
Although Lenoir-Rhyne improved their shooting in the fourth period, the Indians kept pace and didn't let the Bears back in the game. Downs scored 6 points in the quarter while Hallman scored 3. DeShazo would score 4 points and finish the game with 12.
Catawba won the battle in the paint by out-scoring the Bears 34-22. Another major difference in the game was the Indians defense forcing turnovers. Lenoir-Rhyne turned the ball over 23 times which hurt their chances tremendously.
Next week Catawba looks to stay hot when they host #16 Anderson for a huge SAC match-up. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
