Snyder, Wilson pitch Baseball to shutout in season-opening win

Wingate, N.C.----Two Catawba College pitchers scattered six hits and the Indians scored single runs in the third and fifth inning, outlasting Wingate University 2-0 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. With the win, Catawba (1-0 overall) is victorious in its season opener. Wingate is 0-3 overall on the young season. Catawba senior Zach Snyder and junior Thomas Wilson combined for a six-hitter. A right-hander, Snyder gave up four hits. The All-SAC performer struck out five and walked two in five innings of work. A left-hander, Wilson allowed only two hits. He struck out seven and walked two. In the third inning, Indian sophomore designated hitter Andrew Daywalt singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Jeff Boyles. One out later, sophomore outfielder Nick Lefko contributed an RBI single to right center, scoring Daywalt. The Indians added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Junior shortstop Mark Smith led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a fly-out by Lefko and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Spence Southard. Smith and senior outfielder Thomas Giles had two hits each for the Indians. Smith and Giles had one double each. For Wingate, freshman second baseman Shaughn Neal was two-for-three. Bulldog senior outfielder Andrew Brockington was two-for-four with a double. Wingate sophomore right-hander Chad Yow was the tough-luck loser. He allowed two earned runs on six hits. Yow struck out four and walked two. Freshman reliever Jeremy Helms gave up only two hits in four innings of work. #####
