#23 Indians Take Care of #13 Anderson 70-58
Salisbury, NC -- In a big South Atlantic Conference match-up Wednesday night, the #23 Catawba women's basketball team (15-1, 10-1 SAC) defeated #13 Anderson (14-3, 9-2 SAC) 70-58. Freshman Lyrik Thorne would lead the way for the Indians with 18 points on 7-14 shooting from the floor.
It was a close game throughout as both teams battled hard for four quarters. The first three periods were won by Catawba by just one point. The Indians led 17-16 after the first period, then out-scored Anderson 14-13 in the second. The third quarter saw the Indians out-score the Trojans 13-12 to take a three point lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter saw the Indians offense take off while their defense was outstanding all game. Despite a slow start, Taisha DeShazo scored 8 points in the fourth period to help finish off the 13th ranked team in the country. Shemya Stanback contributed big off the bench scoring 11 of her 13 points in the second half while also coming up with 3 steals on the contest.
Senior guard Madison Hallman put up another double digit scoring effort with 10 points. Despite only shooting 30% as a team, the Catawba defense locked down the Trojans' offense. Anderson shot 37% from the field and just 3-15 from long range. The Indians also scored 23 points off Anderson's turnovers.
Coming in ranked #23 in the country, this is the first time the women's program has been inside the top 25 since the 2001-2002 season. With the win tonight, Catawba remains at the top of the SAC standings one game ahead of the Trojans who sit second place tied with Tusculum.
The Indians will face Tusculum this Saturday inside Goodman Gym at 2 pm as they look to extend their lead atop the SAC standings.
