Catawba Gets Conference Road Win at Newberry 89-86
Newberry, SC -- It was an entertaining back and forth battle Wednesday night as the Catawba men's basketball team (13-6, 8-5 SAC) earned an overtime victory over Newberry (11-8, 7-6) 89-86. Malik Constantine went off for 25 points on the night by shooting 8-13 from the field.
Marcell Haskett led Catawba with 10 first half points. Meanwhile for the Wolves, TJ Brown scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half. Newberry hit 8 three pointers in the half on 15 attempts. The Indians kept pace by hitting 14 shots and going 6-6 from the free throw line.
Catawba had a sizeable advantage in the paint, out-scoring the Wolves 20-12 in the half. Despite being down by 1 point, the Indians led for 24 minutes in half number one.
The second half saw the two teams battle it out again as the game came down to the wire. Both teams had almost identical shooting stats in the half, as Catawba shot 47% while the Wolves shot 46%. Newberry once again hit eight 3's, but the Indians would hit 6 of their own as the game came down to the final possession.
Catawba had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but the ball was knocked away before they could get a shot off and the game headed to overtime.
The Indians would win the overtime period 10-7 to get the victory. In overtime, Catawba shot 3-6 from the floor and were led by Constantine's 4 points.
Zaqwuan Matthews turned in a big game scoring 17 points, including 5 three pointers. Devin Cooper came through with 16 points on 5-12 shooting.
This Saturday the team will travel to UVA-Wise looking for another SAC win. Gametime is set for 4 pm.
