Men's Hoops Edges Cavaliers 67-66
Wise, VA -- It came down to the wire, but the Catawba men's basketball team (14-6, 9-5 SAC) held on to defeat UVA-Wise (5-15, 1-13 SAC) 67-66 Saturday afternoon. The high scorer for the Indians was Marcell Haskett, who scored 17 points. Fifteen of those points came in the second half.
The game was close throughout as the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise went toe to toe with the Indians all the way down to the final seconds. Haskett would hit two free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Haskett struggled in the first half, going 0-2 and scoring just 2 points. He would turn that around, however, and lead his team to a big win on the road.
Half number one saw Catawba shoot 34% from the field. Malik Constantine led the Indians with 10 points, including 6-6 from the charity stripe. Constantine would finish with 14.
Briggs Parris came through with 21 points to lead UVA-Wise on the afternoon. Parris scored 14 of those in half number one. After a rough start, Devin Cooper also got going as he finished the game with 11 points and hit some clutch shots down the stretch.
With less than one minute to play, Catawba held a one point advantage when Haskett fouled Chance Sheffey and gave the Cavaliers a chance to take the lead late. Sheffey would make both free throws and put UVA-Wise on top by one with less than 20 seconds to play. The Indians came down the court the next possession and Haskett would draw a foul on Cameron Whiteside with 7 seconds remaining. Haskett nailed both free throws and Catawba would finish off the Cavaliers 67-66.
One area that changed the game was free throw shooting. UVA-Wise shot just 18-27 (67%) from the charity stripe while the Indians shot 22-26 (85%). Catawba also out-rebounded the Cavaliers 42-36.
Next week the Indians hit the road again when they travel to Wingate on February 5th. Gametime is set for 7:30 pm.
