Women's Basketball falls in final minute at LRHICKORY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne rallied from a 38-31 halftime deficit and defeated visiting Catawba 81-77 in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday night at Shuford Gym. The win give the Bears sole possession of second place in the league as it improves LR to 11-9 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. Catawba falls to 13-8 and 5-3. After erasing the seven-point halftime deficit, the Bears needed a three-point play by Crystal Clary (Hampton, VA) with 16 seconds left to earn the win. The basket gave LR a 79-77 lead. The Lady Indians would turn the ball over on their next possessions and the Bears hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining for the final margin. Catawba jumped out of the gate and scored the game’s first eight points. The Lady Indians would lead by as many as 10, but LR would rally to lead 27-26 with three minutes to go in the initial half. Catawba would connect on three-pointers on its next three possessions to go back up 35-29 and led 38-31 at the break. The Bears hit on just 29/7% in the opening half, but would hit on 66.7% (22-of-33) in the final half. LR went on a 9-2 run to open the final half to tie the score at 40-40 with 17:04 left. The Bears would go on to built a 59-51 edge with 10:45 remaining. Catawba would eventually tie the score at 64-64 with 6:37 left on two free throws by Aisha Stewart (Topeka, KS). Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) would tie the score again at 72-72 on free throws with 2:10 left then put the Lady Indians on top at 75-74 on a three-pointer with 1:44 to go. Clary and Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) would trade baskets to set up Clary’s game-winning basket which came on a putback. Darden led all scorers with 22 points off the bench for Catawba. She connected on 6-of-8 three-pointers. Locklear added 19 points and Stewart 17. Kim Small (Greensboro, NC) paced LR with 17 points, while Shea Blacknell (Chapel Hill, NC) had 14. Shannon Jones (Warrenton, NC) pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds. #####
