Men's Lacrosse Falls in Opener at Belmont Abbey
BELMONT, N.C. -- Catawba fell to host and sixth-ranked Belmont Abbey 18-6 in a season-opening men’s lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Crusaders improve to 3-0, while the Catawba Indians are 0-1.
Belmont Abbey never trailed, scoring the opening four goals. Jared Hadley put Catawba on the board late in the first quarter. Back-to-back goals by Yasir Stroud and Jared Richard had the Indians within 7-3 with just over five minutes left in the half. The Crusaders would take a 10-4 lead to the break and pulled away in the third quarter as they outscored Catawba 7-1 in the period.
Austin Hasen scored six goals to pace Belmont Abbey. Hunter Duford tallied three goals. Bryce Gifford posted 10 saves over 45 minutes in goal for the Crusaders. Thomas Sullivan stopped four in the final quarter.
Belmont Abbey held a 49-36 edge in shots and won 19 of 28 face-offs. The Crusaders scored three goals in four man-up opportunities, while Catawba failed on three chances with a man advantage.
Catawba is at Mount Olive next Saturday at 1 p.m.
