Softball Edged in Tight Doubleheader With Lees-McRae
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Twice visiting Lees-McRae scored the winning runs in the seventh inning to sweep a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday at Whitley Field. The Bobcats improve to 2-0 as they took wins of 2-1 and 6-5. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-2.
In the seventh inning of the opener, Katie Robinson followed a one-out single by Sarah Beth Thomas with a pinch-hit RBI double that snapped a 1-1 tie to provide the margin in game one. Caitlyn Ray homered to leadoff the game, but that run was answered by a solo homer from Catawba’s Riley Tucker.
Tucker finished with three hits for Catawba. Brooke Walser threw six innings for the Lady Indians, allowing a run off three hits with eight strikeouts. Madison Hunter (3-1) took the loss in relief, giving up a run on two hits. Charlsy Traylor allowed just a run on six hits in her complete game win for Lees-McRae. She fanned four and walked two.
In a back-and-forth nightcap, the Bobcats prevailed as they scored twice in the seventh. After a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt to open the inning, Faith Cooke tied the game on a sacrifice fly. The eventual winning run scored on a Catawba error.
Catawba led 3-0 entering the sixth. Jordan Dean singled home Tucker in the first, while Gracie Gibson singled home a run in the fourth to go along with a Taylor Martin sacrifice fly. Lees-McRae struck back with four in the sixth. After an out, the Bobcats strung together six straight hits to take the lead.
Cooke had a two-run double with Addyson Ikard and Cassidy Coleman adding RBI singles. Catawba went on top in the bottom of the inning. Gibson doubled and Allie Baker homered to push the Lady Indians up 5-4.
Hunter (3-2) took another loss in relief. Preston Ellenburg had blanked the Bobcats for five innings and fanned eight before the rough sixth, exiting after Ikard’s game-tying single. Dean and Gibson had two hits each for Catawba.
Cassidy Largen picked up the win. She scattered eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Cooke had two hits for Lees-McRae with Ray scoring twice.
Catawba travels to UNC Pembroke on Sunday for a noon doubleheader.
