Women's Hoops Come up Short to Carson-Newman 96-86
Jefferson City, TN -- Despite a strong offensive performance, the Catawba women's basketball team (19-4, 14-4 SAC) was defeated 96-86 by Carson-Newman (18-6, 14-4 SAC) on Saturday. The loss puts the Indians in a tie for second place in the conference standings with the Eagles, one game behind Anderson.
Carson-Newman got out to a 32-16 lead after the first quarter after an impressive showing by Braelyn Wykle. Wykle scored 12 first quarter points on 4-6 shooting.
The Indians got it going in the second quarter as they scored 25 points to narrow the lead to 13 heading into halftime. DeShazo scored 5 of her points in the quarter to lead Catawba.
After the break, the Eagles wouldn't let the Indians close the gap as Kayla Marosites scored 11 points and Carson-Newman out-scored Catawba 22-16 in the third.
Despite a strong 29 point fourth period, the Indians couldn't complete a comeback and would fall by 10 points. Lyrik Thorne scored 14 points on the day while Shemya Stanback put up 13 points of her own.
This Wednesday night, Catawba will host Queens inside Goodman Gym. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
