Catawba Gets Win #20 With Victory Over Queens
Salisbury, NC -- In an important SAC match-up late in the season, the Catawba women's basketball team (20-4, 15-4 SAC) defeated Queens (5-20, 4-15 SAC) 62-51 to earn their 20th win of the season. Taisha DeShazo led the Indians with 22 points on the night.
Catawba got off to a rough start on offense as they struggled to find the bottom of the net for most of the first quarter. The team shot just 2-15 in the period on two three pointers and two free throws. Luckily the Royals struggled as well scoring 12 points on 4-11 shooting.
Quarter number two saw the Indians find their rhythm as they shot 41% for the period including three makes from long range. The Indians won the quarter 17-8 to take a five point halftime lead.
The third period saw another low scoring quarter as Catawba scored 13 points while Queens scored just 9. Catawba's offense just couldn't find consistency throughout, having to lean on their defense to get the win in this one.
The Indians picked it up in the fourth as they shut the door on the Royals to secure the win. Madison Hallman scored 6 of her 15 points in the final period. DeShazo scored 7 of her points in the fourth quarter to team up with Hallman.
Freshman Lyrik Thorne scored 10 points on the game, shooting 4-8 from the field. Keyotta Garris came in with 8 rebounds to lead the team.
The final regular season home game of the season is this Saturday as Catawba will host Lincoln Memorial for senior day. Tip-off is set for 2 pm.
