Baseball drops doubleheader at BartonWILSON, NC – Catawba was swept by host Barton in a baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Barton Baseball Complex. The Indians fell by the scores of 6-0 and 5-4 in eight innings. The losses drop the Tribe to 2-3 on the year, while Barton improves to 2-2. In the opener, Eric McInerny delivered a two-out single in the opening frame to give the Bulldogs the lone run they would need. In the fourth, Barton added a run off an error and a wild pitch before a solo home run by Dennis Blackmon put the hosts up 3-0 after four innings. Barton would break the game open in the fifth, getting a RBI single from Blackmon and a two-run base knock from McInerny. Catawba managed just four hits of Wes Miller, who walked three and struck out four in the complete game effort. Matt Fairweather started for Catawba and scattered five hits with a pair of walks over five innings. Brian Benton pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Matt Smith collected half of Catawba’s hits. The Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead in their half of the third inning of the nightcap. Spence Southard delivered a two-run single with two outs in the inning and Matt Baker followed with a triple. Smith capped the inning with a run-scoring hit. Barton would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third as Blackmon connected on a two-run homer. Blackmon would reduce the margin to a single run with a solo shot in the fifth for his third homer of the day and second of the game. In the seventh, Will Walmsley led off the Bulldog inning with a pinch hit single, but was erased at home on Travis Holloman’s ensuing double. Holloman would go to third on the play and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Justin Wilkes. Barton would score the game-winner in the eighth. Michael Kopp delivered a one-out double to put runners on second and third. Following an intentional walk, Kevin Brosseau singled home McInerny to end the game. Barton pounded out 12 hits in the win, while Jayme Jones earned the win in relief as he tossed five innings of one-hit ball with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Jeff Abdelnour tossed six innings for the Tribe, allowing three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. Smith had two of the five Tribe hits. #####
