Softball Drops Two on Saturday at YHC Tournament
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. -- Catawba dropped a pair of games on Saturday at the YHC Tournament at Rivers Field. The Catawba Indians fell 2-1 to top-ranked and host Young Harris (11-0) before dropping an 9-3 decision to Columbus State (6-6). The Catawba Indians are 6-4 on the season.
Catawba battled #1 Young Harris to the final out in the opener. Riley Tucker got Catawba out to a lead as she led off the third inning with a home run. A two-out double by Michalyn Bingham in the fourth tied the game for the Mountain Lions.
In the bottom of the seventh, Young Harris plated the winning run again with two outs. Preston Ellenberg had retired the first two batters of the inning, but Emily Harris reached on a bunt single. After Morgan Curley walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Carly Rigsbee’s soft single to right brought in the winning run.
Ellenberg (2-1) pitched well in the loss, allowing just five hits over six and two-thirds innings. She would walk five and fan a dozen. Kayla Petersen had two hits for the Lady Indians. Bingham had two of the five hits for Young Harris.
Columbus State erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to grab an 8-0 lead in game two. Caitlyn Canaday’s pinch-hit two run double and Elyse Ambrose’s two-run homer were the big blows. Mary Horne had put CSU up 2-0 in the second with a two-out single.
Catawba avoided the run-rule when Tucker doubled home two in the fifth. Bailey Benton capped the scoring with a RBI-single in the sixth.
Pedersen had two more hits in the nightcap. Tucker and Taylor Martin also had two hits. Brooke Walser (1-1) took the loss in the circle.
Catawba will face Young Harris again on Sunday at 9 a.m. then close out its tournament play against Shorter at 11:30 a.m.
