Strong Senior Day Sees Catawba Defeat LMU 74-54
Salisbury, NC -- It was a senior day to remember as the Catawba women's basketball team (21-4, 16-4 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (10-14, 9-11 SAC) 74-54 Saturday afternoon. The scoring was led by Lyrik Thorne, who put up 15 points and dished out 6 assists.
The Indians were hot right from the jump as they out-scored the Rail Splitters 23-5 in the first quarter. Thorne scored 8 of her points in the period while Lauren Ford scored 4 points. Catawba shot over 50% for the quarter while LMU shot just 12%.
Quarter number two saw more of the same as the Indians continued to poor it on. Shaunae Sawyers hit two three pointers in the period to lead Catawba. The Indians would again shoot over 50% and take a 44-16 lead into halftime.
After the break, LMU caught fire and came out with great energy. They out-scored Catawba 23-14 in the quarter to cut the lead to 19 points going to the fourth. Sydney Newsome led LMU in scoring on the day, racking up 16 points, with 10 of them coming from the charity stripe.
The Indians' defense stepped up in the final period and held LMU to 15 points. Sara McIntosh helped on the offensive end scoring 5 points in the quarter.
The next to last game of the regular season takes place on Wednesday as Catawba travels to face conference leading Anderson. The Indians sit one game back, and with a win would have first place to themselves thanks to a tiebreaker. Gametime is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
