Catawba Offensive Struggles Lead to 71-56 Loss to Anderson
Anderson, SC -- It was a tough night for the Catawba women's basketball team as they fell to #21 and SAC leading Anderson (23-4, 18-3 SAC) 71-56. The loss drops the Indians' record to 21-5 overall and 16-5 in the conference, leaving them sitting second in the standings with one game to go.
The first half was a tight one as both teams traded baskets back and forth. After one period, the Trojans led 18-12 after shooting 40% from the field. Alexy Mollenhauer led Anderson in points on the night with 16, with 7 of those coming in the first quarter.
Catawba played well in the second period by shooting 52%. The Trojans kept pace, however, and shot 53% as the Anderson took a 5 point halftime lead.
Anderson had an 8 point advantage after three periods as they out-scored the Indians 15-12 in the third. Mollenhauer scored 8 points in the quarter as she was tough to stop all night.
The Trojans put the game away in the final period led by McKenzie Gadson's 6 point quarter. Catawba shot 29% in the period as their offense struggled for all of half number two.
With the win the Trojans secured the SAC regular season title. Mollenhauer, who has been one of the Trojans' biggest weapons this season, collected 16 rebounds on the night as she completed a dominate double-double.
For the Indians, Lyrik Thorne led the way with 14 points. Mercedes Wampler scored 12 points while Shemya Stanback put up 9. Wampler also grabbed 7 boards.
This Saturday Catawba wraps up its regular season with a road game at Lenoir-Rhyne, with tip-off set for 2 pm.
