Softball gets one win in season-opening tourneyJACKSONVILLE, FL – Catawba College opened its 2004 softball season by winning one of five games at the Osprey Invitational over the weekend at the UNF Softball Complex. Catawba dropped games against USC-Aiken 8-4, Armstrong Atlantic 10-0 and twice to host North Florida 7-3 and 5-1. The Lady Indians earned a win 3-2 over UNC-Pembroke in eight innings. Aiken used a six-run fifth inning, aided by Jennifer Scott’s grand slam, to break open a 1-1 game. Freshman Jeana Craver collected two hits for Catawba, including a home run in her first collegiate at bat. She also doubled. Stacey Handy doubled home a pair of Tribe runs. The Lady Indian win came in its second game on Saturday. Shannon Handy picked up the win on the mound, surrendering just three hits with two walks in eight innings. Only one of the runs against her was earned and she posted three strikeouts. Pembroke took the lead in the sixth on a home run by Brookes Musser, but a clutch two-out hit by Ashlee Rhoades in the seventh tied the score. After UNCP took a 2-1 lead, Jessica Rivera doubled home a tying run and Craver singled home the game-winner. In the first game against host North Florida, Catawba used a three-run third to tie the game at 3-3. Rivera doubled home a pair of runs and Craver plated the final run on a ground out. The Ospreys came right back with four in the fourth, three on a home run by Alisha Phillips. On Sunday, a three-run homer by Kim Graham broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth and helped propel North Florida to the win. Rivera had two hits for Catawba and drove home the lone run on a double. Catawba fell 10-0 to Armstrong Atlantic, which reached the 10 run mark in three of its four games. Katie Phelps and Vivian Lee had the two Lady Indian hits. Craver led the Lady Indian in the tournament at the plate with a .364 average and three RBI. Rivera had four RBI with three doubles.
