Catawba Rolls Past Queens 11-3 Friday Afternoon
Charlotte, NC -- The wins keep coming for the Catawba baseball team (13-2, 4-0 SAC) as they defeated Queens (2-14, 2-2 SAC) on the road Friday afternoon 11-3. Hunter Shepherd came through with a 3-4 performance with 3 RBI on the day as the team's win streak is at 13 games.
It was a battle of number one starters as Greg Brown faced off against Nick Charleson. Brown had a solid outing until the 4th inning, when an error led to 3 unearned runs for the Royals. Brown would go 4.1 innings giving up 3 hits, 3 unearned runs, and 3 strikeouts.
For Charleson, he went 5.0 innings while giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, and walked 6 Indians hitters. Both starters would get no decisions on the day.
Catawba jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring 1 run in the 2nd inning and 2 in the 3rd. Lee Poteat, who went 3-4 with 2 runs scored, knocked in the first run. Then Shepherd hit a 2 run homer in the 3rd to make it 3-0.
With the game tied at 3-3, Jackson Raper and Shepherd drove in a run each to take a 5-3 lead in the 6th inning. Catawba scored 6 more times in the 8th and 9th innings combined to put the game out of reach for Queens.
Raper would go 2-5 on the afternoon with 1 RBI while Cameron Morrison continued his hot hitting by going 2-6 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored. Luke Spiva collected 2 hits and 2 walks on the game. Shortstop Jeremy Simpson also had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs.
Sawyer Strickland got the win for Catawba after going 4.2 innings out of the bullpen. Laxton struck out 8 Royals hitters and gave up just 2 hits. Laxton improved to 2-0 on the year with the win.
Tomorrow the Indians play a doubleheader at Queens starting at 11 am.
