Pezzulo Ties School Record With Seven Assists in Loss to Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Mars Hill held off a late Catawba rally to claim a 14-13 win in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Lions improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-3 and 0-1.
The Lions led 13-6 after a goal from Molly Tobias with 21:36 remaining, but Catawba responded with the next six tallies to make it 13-12 with 7:37 to go. Mars Hill got a goal from Alexa Tazzetta at the 7:11 mark before Katie Barth got the Lady Indians back within a goal with 4:22 left.
Catawba had turnovers on two following possessions and missed on a free-position shot with 1:35 to go. The Lady Indians had one final chance, but had a turnover with 35 seconds left and Mars Hill ran out the clock.
Mars Hill scored the first six goals and led 9-2 late in the first half. Catawba got two late goals to make it 9-4 before the strong start for the Lions in the second half led to the 13-6 edge.
Gianna Pezzullo scored three goals for Catawba and tied a school record with seven assists. Brooklyn Tilley netted five goals with Barth adding three. Barth won five draw controls and Tilley four. Pezzulo caused three turnovers. Aryn Dorr posted a dozen saves.
Mars Hill got five goals from Sydney Joyce to go with six draw controls. Alexa Tazzetta had three goals, while Maria Fabrizio had two goals and two assists. Gini Joy posted 10 saves.
Catawba will host Limestone on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
