Softball Drops Doubleheader at Newberry
NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Newberry swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves won by the scores of 4-0 and 5-1 as they improve to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 8-8 and 0-2.
Selice Daley (9-1) limited Catawba to five hits in posting the shutout in game one. She walked none and struck out four. The Wolves took advantage of a Catawba error in the fifth to plate three runs. Mallena Wright doubled home the first run and later scored on a two-out single by Reagan Glanz.
Brooke Walser (2-2) also gave up just five hits in the loss. She walked one and fanned three. Two of the four runs scored were unearned.
Catawba avoided the shutout in game two with a run in the seventh. Brooke Lowery singled and Nicole Hunter walked. Kayla Pedersen delivered the run-scoring single with one out. Riley Tucker had two hits in the game. Preston Ellenberg (3-2) suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Tedi Nunn singled home two runs for Newberry in the second and Haley Simonds added a two-run homer in the sixth. Alyssa Ball (6-0) allowed a run on six hits with five strikeouts in grabbing the win.
Catawba hosts Wingate for a league doubleheader on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
