Dramatic Comeback Nets Men's Lacrosse Overtime Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Freshman Yasir Stroud scored 36 seconds into overtime as host Catawba rallied for an 11-10 victory over Maryville (Mo.) in men’s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-3, while the Saints drop to 2-3.
Stroud’s goal capped a dramatic comeback for Catawba, who trailed 10-8 in the final 30 seconds. Maryville took a shot clock violation and turned the ball over to the Indians with 34 seconds left. Payton Leonard quickly cleared for Catawba and scored with 23 seconds left to cut the deficit to 10-9.
Shawn Casebolt won the ensuing face-off that was controlled by Christian Norrie. Norrie fed Stroud, who tied the game with 7.6 seconds remaining. Casebolt won another face-off and Stroud just missed at the horn. Casebolt had another face-off win to open overtime and Stroud scored as he drove from behind the goal to net the winner.
Stroud led Catawba with four goals. Norrie had three goals and handed out three assists. Caseball won 15 of 25 face-offs and had seven ground balls. Kevin Geiger recorded 16 saves in goal.
Jake Foster posted three goals for Maryville. Jacob Allen and Declan Mulholland each scored twice. William DeVinney notched 10 saves.
Maryville scored the opening two goals, but Norrie put in two to pull Catawba even after a quarter. The teams went back-and-forth until the Saints used a four-goal run that was capped by two from Foster that had the visitors up 9-6 with 10 minutes remaining.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday, hosting Mars Hill in its conference opener at noon.
