Baseball falls in extra innings at PembrokePEMBROKE, NC – Down 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, UNC-Pembroke rallied for three runs with two outs to force extra innings that led to a 7-6 win in 10 innings over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Braves Field. Andrew Rosen delivered a one-out RBI when he was hit by a Brian Benton pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Tripp Lockhart for the winning run. With the win, UNCP improves to 3-2 overall, while Catawba falls to 2-4. A pitcher’s dual for the first three innings, neither squad could push across a run until the fourth inning. Catawba capitalized on a Braves error and hit batsman to take a 1-0 lead without notching a hit. Carrying a no-hitter into the fifth, UNCP’s Eric Stewart hit a batter, and the Indians used another Braves error to place runners at first and third with no outs. Mark Smith then tallied the Tribe’s first hit of the game to score their second run. Matt Baker followed with a two-run double to put the Indians and Scott Searles hit a sacrifice fly to put Catawba ahead 5-0. UNCP managed to scratch a run in the bottom-half of the fifth on doubles by Isaac Ezzell and Lockhart, only to see the Indians get it back in the top of the sixth. Trailing 6-1 in the eighth, the Braves showed some offensive firepower. After Andrew Rosen singled down the right field line, Ty Rutledge connected on a home run to cut the lead to 6-3. Two walks and a single allowed the Braves to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with no outs. Zach Snyder, on in relief, rebounded to strike out Rosen and Rutledge before giving up a RBI-walk to Zach Conaway. Justin Bowman then reached on an error and a second throwing error allowed two UNCP players to score, forcing the game into extra innings. Catawba finished with six runs on seven hits, committing six errors in the loss. Brian Benton was credited with the loss for the Indians. UNCP recorded seven runs on ten hits and made three errors en route to the victory. Mike Mattox picked up his first win as a Brave, pitching one shutout inning and retiring Catawba in order. During the 2003 season, UNCP scored nine runs in the ninth to defeat Catawba 13-11. #####
