Softball Drops Doubleheader to Wingate

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate took both ends of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Bulldogs improved to 11-7 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, winning 3-2 and 7-2. The Catawba Indians are 8-10 and 0-4.

Jordan Dean provided all the offense for Catawba. She went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with three home runs and four RBI. Kayla Pedersen had a hit in each game with Carlee Brawley, Taylor Martin and Katelyn Jones collecting hits in game two. 

All the scoring in the opener came in the first two innings. The Bulldogs went on top on a single by Aubrey Reep in the first. Catawba answered in the bottom half. Pedersen singled and Dean homered for a 2-1 lead. Jessica VonVannon led off the second for Wingate with a homer to tie and Reep singled with two outs to give the Bulldogs their 3-2 edge.

Reep (6-2) would earn the win in the circle. She allowed just three hits with a dozen strikeouts. Reedp added three hits along with Haley Cashwell. Brooke Walser (2-3) took the loss for Catawba. Madison Hunter shutout the Bulldogs on two hits with five strikeouts over the final two and two-thirds innings.

Sam Hogan and Dean each hit solo homers in the third inning of game two before the Bulldogs broke the game open with two in the fourth and three in the fifth. VonCannon hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Reep hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Dean capped her day with another homer in the seventh.

Raechel Cutcher (5-5) went seven innings and fanned six to get the win for Wingate. Hunter (3-4) took the loss for Catawba.

Catawba next hosts Bloomsburg for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
