Women's Hoops Scores First Round Win in SAC Tournament
Newberry, SC -- In their third match-up of the season, the Catawba women's basketball team (23-5) defeated Newberry (16-12) 56-47 in the first round of the SAC tournament. Freshman Lyrik Thorne shined in her first tournament action by scoring 17 points.
It was a struggle on the offensive end for both teams the entire game, especially for the Wolves. In the first quarter, Newberry shot just 1-12 (8%) from the field and scored 4 points. The Indians scored 16 on 5-14 shooting in the period.
The second quarter wasn't much better as the Wolves scored 11 points on 2-9 shooting. Luckily for them, Catawba's offense also struggled as they put up 10 points in the period. At the half, the Indians led 26-14.
Newberry wouldn't draw any closer in the third as their offense just couldn't get going. Thorne scored 5 of her points in the third quarter as the Indians took a 13 point lead into the fourth.
There wouldn't be any change in the flow of the game in the final period as the Indians held the their lead and secured the first round victory. Catawba shot 53% in the fourth quarter and played solid defense to finish off the Wolves.
Keyotta Garris put together another solid outing by scoring 8 points and 7 rebounds. Lauren Ford scored 7 and collected 4 boards. Meanwhile for Newberry, Kelsey McDermott was the high scorer with 10 points on 4-11 shooting. Brandi Hall put up 9 points and finished the game with 8 rebounds.
Catawba will face Anderson for their third match-up this Saturday at 12 pm. Each team won on their home court in the first two games, and the Trojans will host the semifinal match on Saturday.
