Haskett's Career High 38 Leads Catawba Over Newberry

Salisbury, NC -- In SAC tournament first round action, Catawba men's basketball (20-9) defeated Newberry (14-15) 89-87 in an exciting back and forth game that featured a huge performance from senior Marcell Haskett. Haskett scored a career high 38 points, shooting 14-20 from the field and 6-11 from long range.

Haskett could not be stopped all night, as he hit shot after shot with defenders in his face. Haskett also got help from teammate Malik Constantine who scored 15 points and surpassed the 1,000 career point mark early in the first half. With his performance tonight, Haskett is just 3 points away from 1,000 for his career.

Another milestone was also reached as coach Rob Perron scored his 100th win as the Catawba men's basketball head coach. Perron and the Indians will go for another win in the semi-finals this Saturday.

The first half was all Catawba as they were led by Haskett's 17 points. Constantine scored 11 in the half while Devin Cooper and Terrence Whitfield scored 5 points each. Albemarle native Luke Gibson scored 15 points for Newberry in the half and finished with 23. Jalen Johnson put up 7 first half points.

While the second half was back and forth, the Wolves would cut the lead to just 2 points with less than a minute to play. With 9 seconds left, Newberry tied the game on a Gibson jump shot to make the score 87-87.

Catawba got the ball in the hands of Haskett for the final shot and he would come through with a layup with 1 second left to play. Newberry attempted a long pass down the court on the next inbound play, but the Indians tipped it away and secured the victory.

With the win, Catawba will travel to Furman for the semifinal game of the SAC tournament to face Queens this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
