Baseball Loses 4-2 to Lenoir-Rhyne to Snap Win Streak
Salisbury, NC -- The win streak is over as Catawba baseball 15-3, (6-1 SAC) lost to Lenoir-Rhyne (11-9, 4-3) Friday night by the score of 4-2. The game was pitched well by both sides, but the Bears' starter John Grigg was the key for LR as he went 7.0 innings and gave up just 1 earned run.
The Bears' first run came in the 2nd inning when Chipper McGinnes drove home a run on an RBI groundout. The Indians would tie the game in the bottom half of the frame on a Jeremy Simpson RBI double.
LR came right back in the 3rd scoring another run, this time on a Xander Ferlanda single to make the score 2-1. Once again Catawba tied the game in the 4th when Simpson brought home another run on an RBI groundout to second base.
The Bears scored the eventual game-winning runs in the 5th after Ferlanda homered to left field to make the score 4-2. The Indians threatened in the 7th and 8th innings but couldn't come through with a big hit to draw any closer.
Greg Brown got the start for the Indians and went 5.0 innings, giving up 6 hits, 4 runs and 4 strikeouts. Sawyer Strickland and DJ Laxton pitched well out of the 'pen and didn't allow anymore LR runs.
Simpson had a big day at the plate going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Joe Butts also went 2-4 on the night, while Cameron Morrison went 2-3 with a walk.
Tomorrow afternoon the teams play a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm.
