Softball Swept By Bloomsburg
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Bloomsburg swept a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Huskies won by the scores of 4-1 and 9-7 to improve to 5-3 on the year. The Catawba Indians fall to 8-12.
In the opener, the straight hits to open the second put the visitors on top. Nicolette Ray’s double put the Huskies up 1-0. Julia Knight followed with a sacrifice fly and Tyler White a RBI single for a 3-0 edge.
Sammi Starr added a home run in the sixth for Bloomsburg. Catawba scored an unearned run in the sixth. Preston Ellenberg had a pinch-hit single to plate the run.
Abby Wild scattered seven hits for the win. She walked three and struck out five. Starr and Ray each had two hits. Brooke Walser (2-4) surrendered six hits in the loss. She walked none and had one strikeout.
Bloomsburg rallied twice to take game two. Down 4-2, the Huskies scored four times in the fifth all with two outs. Briannah Dobson had a two-run single that tied the game and scored on a double by Danielle Barnes.
Catawba came back in the bottom half of the fifth. Two walks and a RBI single by Bailey Benton cut the deficit to 6-5. Allie Baker scored on a wild pitch and Carlee Brawley beat out an infield single to drive in a run to put the Lady Indians back up 7-6.
The Huskies struck again with two outs in the sixth. Kelsey Impink singled and Starr homered for an 8-7 lead. Dobson added a solo homer to open the seventh to cap the scoring.
Brawley had two hits for Catawba in game two. Baker scored twice. Madison Hunter (3-5) took the loss in relief of Ellenberg, who left a batter into the fifth after being struck in the leg with a line drive. Wild (4-2) got her second win in relief for Bloomsburg, shutting out Catawba over three innings.
Catawba travels to Limestone on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
