Howes named SAC Scholar Athlete for Men's Cross Country

GREENEVILLE, TN -- Catawba College sophomore Jesse Howes (Huntington, MA) has been named as the recipient of the South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award for Men's Cross Country. A product of Gateway Regional High School, Howes is the third Catawba cross country runner to earn the honor, but the first on the men's side. Howes had led the Indians in every meet over the past two years. Last season, he was a first team All-SAC performer, as well as being named Freshman of the Year. Howes was also named All-Southeast Region and qualified for the 2000 NCAA Division II National Championships. He holds five of the top eight best times in school history, including the school 8k record of 26:50, set this season. Howes has a attained a 3.68 GPA as an athletic training major. He is a four-time member of the Dean's List, and has been named to the Presidents Honor Roll, the Catawba Athletic Honor Roll and the SAC Honor Roll. He is a member of the Phi Epsilon Honor Society. On campus and in the community, Howes serves as an Honor Court Justice, is Vice President of Phi Epsilon and Treasurer of the Philomathean Society. He is a member of the Order of Blue and White, a citizenship honor society, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Howes has volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Drive and the Nazareth Children's Home Easter egg hunt. The South Atlantic Conference Scholar Athlete Award is presented to one athlete from each of the league's 14 sport programs and represents a combination of athletic skill, academic achievement and participation in community service and leadership. #######
