Men's Basketball falls to Tusculum
SALISBURY, NC – Tusculum College opened the second half on a 14-2 run and went on to defeat host Catawba 78-53 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym. The Pioneers improve to 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while Catawba falls to 8-14 and 3-6.
After a brief Catawba lead in opening minutes, Tusuclum would begin to pull away, taking a 16-8 edge at the 13:03 mark. Long range shooting kept the Tribe in the game in the opening half, as the Indians hit six three-pointers in the opening half. A trey by Duke Phipps (Newport News, VA) brought Catawba within 22-21 with 9:04 to go.
Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELNAD) hit a three with 4:31 remaining in the half to make the score 29-26, but that would be the last three-pointer on the night for the Indians. Tusculum followed with a 9-0 run and led 38-30 at the break.
The Pioneers dominated the second half and built its lead to as many as 30 points in the final 10 minutes. Tusculum shot 53% for the game to just 37% for the Indians and had just 11 turnovers to 18 for Catawba.
Drew Harmon (Germantown, WI), led the scoring for Tusculum with 17, while Cliff Charles (Newark, NJ) added 14. Bobby Ewing (Owensboro, KY) added 12 off the bench with Brad Hawks (Galax, VA) also reaching double figures with 10. Magnusson had 14 to lead Catawba with Brian Graves
(Newport News, VA) added 11 and Jorvewe Gibson (Charlotte, NC) 10.
