Whitener Tabbed as Men's and Women's Tennis Coach

Larry Leckonby, Director of Athletics at Catawba College, has announced that Kent Whitener has been named as Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Tennis. He comes to Catawba from Pfeiffer University, where he served as Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach for the past five seasons.

“I would like to thank our Associate Athletic Director, Jeff Childress, for coordinating the search that led us to Kent,” said Leckonby. “We are excited to add Kent, Alisa and Grant to the Catawba Family!!”

In 2015-16, Whitener guided the Falcon men to the Conference Carolinas finals and earned Coach of the Year honors. The initial season after leaving Division II, Whitener’s 2017-18 squad won the ECAC Championship.

The Pfeiffer women’s team reached the CC Tournament semifinals in 2015-16. Whitener mentored numerous all-conference selections, including one Carolinas Conference Women’s Player of the Year.

Whitener, who was a top 10 ranked junior, played collegiately at Pfeiffer. Graduating in 2005 with a degree in computer information systems, Whitener played the top spot for the Falcons and was team MVP.

After his playing career at Pfeiffer, he worked at the Van Der Meer World Class Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. While there, Whitener worked with several national ranked juniors that went on to compete at the highest Division I levels.

In 2009, he became the Director of Tennis at the Rockbridge Club in Columbia, S.C., where he stayed until joining Pfeiffer. Whitener led all areas of tennis from large adult and junior tournaments to the highest level of college tennis.

A native of Newton, N.C., Whitener is a certified PTR Professional, USTA Rated 5.0. Whitener and his wife, Alisa, have a son, Grant.
